Twas the night after Christmas....

Twas the night after Christmas, and all through the house
Not a creature was thankful, not even a mouse.
The stockings were emptied, the candy all eaten
the once live Christmas tree now thoroughly beaten.

The children were bouncing around with glee,
exclaiming over each new toy happily.
And momma rocking junior, glad it's all over,
and dad in his chair, already tired of hearing Grover.

Once again time to pack away all Christmas cheer,
until this time comes again next year.
The house in disorder shall soon be righted,
once junior decides bedtime's been sighted.

The ornaments removed, each packed in it's place,
the tree taken down, leaving empty space.
Children scamper away, hoping to only play,
Leaving mom and dad to do the cleanup this day.

Dad walks outside, surveying the yard,
thinking, 'putting this up wasn't this hard.'
Santa and reindeer deflate to a pile,
lights removed from roofing tile.

Where wrapping paper was shredded,
mom seems to be headed,
for cleaning up the messes,
everyone knows moms are the bestest.

And finally the scene, oh holy last night,
gets packed away, once again out of sight.
Precious baby Jesus, all swaddled in foam,
is tucked away in His new home.

But, does anyway thank Jesus for the treasures they hold,
For the dear baby given, as angels foretold?
Does anyone remember what He gave to us?
His life for our own, that's something to discuss.

Let's not forget, as the days pass us by,
the reason we sing "O Holy Night".
The dear baby boy, born long ago,
who died on the cross so that we may know

the saving grace of a King, given to every man,
to know the salvation that is at hand.
To accept Jesus Christ, as Savior to all
and make Him your King, that isn't so small.

So please remember, the reason we sing
The message behind each bell that rings
In joyful worship to the newborn King
Oh Savior, Messiah, our praises we bring.

The Wonder of Your Love

As a fan of Beth Wiseman, I was thrilled to be able to review this book. I review books for Thomas Nelson through their book review program at booksneeze.com, receiving complementary books in return for my honest review.

I enjoyed the first in the Land of Canaan Series, Seek Me with All Your Heart. This sequel is a great continuation of the story, but can also be read as a stand alone book.

Katie Ann is a single mother. Her husband has left her for an Englisher, and passed away before she could write him about her pregnancy. She has no immediate family, besides her in-laws. Her best friend Martha, and Englisher who visits her often, is like a second mother to her.

She meets handsome Eli at a neighbor's wedding. He is a widower, who has raised 6 kinner on his own. Although he was encouraged to remarry when his wife died seventeen years before, he has never met the right woman. Until now. But, does Eli really want to begin another family when his children are all grown, married and having children of their own?

As Katie Ann and Eli get to know each other better, they are faced with life's unending changes individually. But, they each reach out to the other through letters and phone calls, depending on each other during tears, laughter, heartache and more.

Will Katie Ann and Eli realize what those around them have seen for months? Will they learn to let go of the past and cherish the love they have been given?

I could not walk away from my computer after beginning this book. I downloaded the ebook and began reading. By chapter three, I was hooked. I stayed up that night reading. Beth Wiseman is one of my favorite authors, and she has kept up the great work with The Wonder of Your Love. I look forward to book #3.

Smack dab in the middle of God's love

This delightful children's book takes place in Mexico. Willie Juan and Ana can't have children. But that's ok, because all the neighborhood children liked to gather around them, especially when Ana made sopapillas.

If you have never had a sopapilla, I recommend that you try one. I've made theses myself. And they are fantastic! Now, I've never tried it with honey, like Ana does. MAybe next time I make them, I will have to try it.

Willie Juan likes to sit around with the kids and talk to them about anything, and everything. The children love to ask Willie Juan questions. And sometimes he asks them questions too. This leads to a discussion about God's love.

All age groups will enjoy the way that Willie Juan tells the children about God's love, and the examples he uses to show the kids how much God loves them. I know I've enjoyed this book.

As Ana says, “Every good thing comes from smack-dab in the middle of Abba’ s heart.” Even sopapillas.

Here's the recipe I use to make sopapillas:

prep time 10 minutes, cook time 1 minute per batch, makes 24

2 c flour
1/4 c vegetable shortening
1 T baking powder
1 t salt
2/3 c whole milk
1/4 c powdered sugar
1 t ground cinnamon
vegetable oil for frying

1) In bowl, with a fork, mix flour, shortening, baking powder and salt to resemble course crumbs. And milk. Stir until dough holds together. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth, about 3 minutes.

2) With a floured rolling pin, roll 1/2 the dough into a 12"x9" rectangle. Cut into twelve 3"x3" squares. Repeat for remaining dough.

3) In a cup, mix sugar and cinnamon. Set aside. In a 10 inch skillet, heat 1 inch of oil over med-high heat to 400 degree F on deep fry thermometer. Fry 4 squares at a time, turning with a slotted spoon as soon as they rise to the surface, then turning 2-3 times until golden and puffed. Drain squares on paper towel.

4) Sprinkle with sugar mixture while still warm, and serve.

The Harvest of Grace

This is the third book in the Ada's House Series. I have only read one other one in this series, and I was impressed with it. So, when I had the opportunity to review this book for Waterbrook Publishers, I took it.

Sylvia wants to help run her family's dairy farm. Her grandfather recognized this, so he left her a house and part of the farm when he died. But things didn't go according to plan for Sylvia. Her beau, Elam, proposes. But she doesn't think she is quite ready to settle down. So he turns around and proposes to her sister, who accepts. Sylvia is hurt by this, but more so when she realizes that, even a year after the wedding, Elam still cares for her.

So Sylvia leaves. She settles on a dairy farm a couple hours ride away, by buggy. There she meets Aaron, only remaining child of the dairy farm owners. But he has his own plans for the farm. He wants to sell and move his parents into town, where he will run an appliance store.

Sylvia learns how to rely on God, whom she had walked away from. She also learns the value of family and friends.

I really enjoyed this book. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys Amish fiction. I did receive this complementary book in return for my honest review.

100 Days of Favor

If you've never heard Joseph Prince speak, you need to. If you've never read one of his books, you are missing out. This man is an awesome man of God.

Here is what Joseph Prince says about this book in his introduction:

If you would simply set aside these 100 days just to immerse and saturate yourself in the unmerited favor of God, I believe with all my heart that your life will never be the same again. Every morning as you are sitting there with a warm mug of coffee in your hand, simply pick up this book. I'd like us to spend 15 minutes together and have an intimate chat about Jesus. I believe that these precious minutes will help you calibrate you thinking for the rest of the day.

This isn't one of those books that you skim through and put down, and your life was never changed. This is one of those books that can help transform your life to be as God wants it to be. He made you for a reason, and He wants to spend time with Him. He loves you, and cherishes every minute you spend with Him.

I am very impressed by this book. Actually, that is putting it mildly. 100 Days of Favor has become part of my morning routine. I only hope you enjoy it as much as I am.

Spiritual Warfare for Women

When I saw this book on the choices to review for Bethany House, I jumped at the opportunity. But then, it just sat on the shelf collecting dust. I really wasn't so sure I wanted to read it. I mean, aren't "learning" books usually kinda boring? But then I read the introduction. And I was hooked.

As Christians, it is real easy to say "well God said He would take care of me. So why am I faced with (fill in the blank)." We tend to question why God would just stand back and allow us to go through stuff, when He is almighty and could deliver us from all our problems. The author, Leighann McCoy, does a great job answering that:

The goal of the Christian walk is not to avoid pain and suffering. Pain and suffering are guarenteed when we follow Jesus (John 16:33). Pain and suffering are also guaranteed if you don't follow Jesus. They are natural by-products of living in a sin-stained world (Genesis 3).
The goal of the Christian walk is to walk with Jesus through both the good times and the bad. God's intent is not to seal us up in a spiritually sterile bubble, but rather to allow pain and suffering in this world to hammer and mold us into the image of His Son.

In chapter two, Leighann starts to get more into the lesson that is taught in this book. But, she has a warning for those that are not sure if they even want to read it:

If you are afraid, if your goal is to avoid warfare at all cost, then put this book down. Don't read another word. Your awareness of spiritual warfare will increase the more you learn about God and the more you seek to know Him intimately. The devil aims his fiery darts at those warriors who pose the greatest threat to his wicked schemes. But before you put this book back on the shelf and decide not to learn the art of war, know that you will live a life void of the power and presence of God. Your life will reflect a God shadow rather than a God glory.

Wow, if that doesn't just sum it up. So, I can chose. I can live a life reflecting God's glory, learning more and more about Him, worshiping Him intimately, have a "Moses-God" relationship with Him (being able to talk to him in person, one on one). Or I can go through the motions, live a Christian life without actually delving into an intimate relationship and reflect God's shadow. Hmmm, doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out which choice is richer.

As I work my way through this book, I notice changes in my life that affect me in a profound way. And not all of those changes are pleasant. There have been struggles I have been facing, more so since I started reading it. So, I put it down, I quit reading it. And guess what? The struggles didn't stop. I recently heard that the devil attacks us for two reasons: invitation and injustice. I believe that by wanting to develop a closer relationship with God I ticked off the devil. So, that would make the struggles I have faced an injustice. But I don't stand alone. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:3-5 NASB)

My thoughts:
Awesome book. Powerful book. One I will read again, but next time with a highlighter!

Who are these kids?!?!?

I am very proud of the fact that my children are well behaved. I have been around a lot of kids... some not so well behaved, if you know what I mean. My kids get compliments occasionally when we are out in public (store, fast food, whatever) that they are very well behaved. And yes, it makes me feel great.

But recently, the "other side" has reared it's ugly head. And it makes me wonder...

Who are these kids?

I really want my well behaved kids back. You know, the ones that ask before they take something from someone. The ones who say "excuse me" when they want to say something to me while I am on the phone. The ones who look out for each other.

My kids are 10 (boy), 8 (girl), and 7 (girl). (Sorry, I don't know the initals most people use.. what is DD again?) I guess they are at the age when they start asserting themselves more often. But do they have to assert themselves at the same time?!?! And I suppose they are bored.. I mean, school doesn't start for another 5 days. But, they have had a pretty busy summer.

So, I stand back, shake my head, and hope that these kids will leave soon and my kids will return. I have taught them to be more self-sufficient. They can get themselves something to drink, they can take a shower on their own, they can even make a simple lunch themselves. I guess I must have missed the lesson on "You can treat others with respect". Thought I covered that one... hmm, guess it's time for the refresher course.

Anyway, I just had to share my own experiance, and ask... If you've seen my kids, can you send them back to me? You can have the ones I've got. Thanks!

The Chocolate Diaries

Excellent book! Great laughs! Awesome recipes and snack ideas! Great lessons! This book has it all.

I really enjoyed reading my way through The Chocolate Diaries. Each chapter contains uplifting stories from the author's own life and "Sweet Secrets", words of advice from other women. At the end of the chapter, Author Karen Scalf Linamen includes a "Food For Thought" which cause the reader to reflect on her own life in relation to the chapter she has just finished reading.

But my favorite part, honestly, is the "Because Real Women don't need a Cookbook". In each of these random sections the author has a different sweet treat you can make at home, all containing chocolate.

I would recommend this book to all women out there.

Angel Sister

After reading the summary of this book, I was intrigued. Interesting story line, gripping events, and a wonder of the unknown (what will happen in the book) made me pick this book out to read and review. Unfortunately, I could not get into the book. I believe it was more a "this isn't my style of book" rather than the author's writing. Many others seem to enjoy this book. And, I would say it was the story line, but I tried reading another of this author's books, and had the same problem.

In conclusion, I applaud the author for writing such a gripping tale. I only wish that it would have wrapped itself around me and pulled me in for the ride.

Only You, Sierra

As a teen, I used to read the Christy Miller series from Robin Jones Gunn. So, naturally, I was interested in the Sierra Jensen series when they became available. Now I am excited about helping review these wonderful books for the next generation of young people.

Only You, Sierra was a wonderful look into the life of a young Christian girl. Sierra has just arrived home from a missions trip to England. Only, "home" isn't where it was. While she was overseas, her parents changed states, choosing to move in with her grandmother, who is suffering from memory loss. Sierra faces many changes, exceeding the usual jet lag. She now has a new house, new room (where she couldn't even pick where she wanted her bed), new school, new friends. How can she possibly keep it all straight?

As we step into Sierra's life we see that the changes she faces so come with a bit of stress. But, by relying on God and talking to her family, she is able to come out ahead.

Treasuring Emma

About the book:
Emma is having a hard time seeing the positive around her. Two years ago Adam, the man she fell in love with, left her to be a "Yankee" rather than staying Amish. Since then, her father died. And now, her mother has just died from cancer. She is at a loss. Why doesn't God care?
Adam Otto left the faith, thinking he could find happiness and satisfaction in the world. When he receives a letter asking him to come home and check on his mom, he returns. Will he go back to his Yankee lifestyle? Or will he return to the faith of his ancestors? Where is God in all of this?
Mark King is in town visiting his cousin Peter. Once he meets Emma he decides he wants to get to know her better. What exactly does Mark want from her? What does God want her to do?

My review:
I enjoyed the story line. With all the Amish stories being written now, it is refreshing to find one that is unique. The characters in this book are struggling to hand their lives over to God 100%. They want to rely on their own means. How many times have each of us tried it on our own, only to find that it doesn't work? Yet, when we give God our all, He can and will meet our needs.
I did find one frustration with this book. There were some events that were not in sequence. For instance, in the first couple of chapters Emma is attending her mother's funeral. The next part of the book goes to Adam, who receives a letter. In the letter he is told that Emma's mother had passed away two weeks prior. And yet the when the story goes back to Emma, the funeral is just ending. I was thrown off at first, until I realized the author was going forward in time to explain Adam's arrival. This happens a couple times through the book. But, it did not take away from the enjoyment of the book in general.

Look to the East

I usually don't like reading war stories, but this one was actually pretty good. The main character, Julitte Toussaint, is the adopted child of a French seaman. Raised with a very strong faith in God, the residents of the small town of Briecourt believe she works miracles. They are certain that when she prays, people are instantly healed, and sometimes even raised from the dead. They don't see her faith in God, only the works He preforms through her.

But, when the Germans invade their town, is Julitte's faith enough? Can she still stand strong as she watches men sign up for war? While the remaining men and boys are carted off for German work camps? While her best friend willing goes to work for the Germans, and even falls in love with one?

And what is she supposed to do with these feelings she has towards the Belgian man hiding in the church? During her secret meetings with him, she finds herself falling in love as well.

Follow Julitte's story as her faith is tested and tried. I know I enjoyed reading this book. Hopefully you will too.

Andi wants a horse. She has a pony, but her three brothers and her older sister all rode the pony when they were little. She doesn't want to ride Coco the pony anymore; besides, he trots and Andi doesn't like to trot. So, she comes up with this great plan. She wants a horse for her sixth birthday. She just knows that she is big enough. But her mom says no. Her brothers and sister even say she is too young. Can she take care of a horse? Can she even get up on the horse?

This book teaches younger children about responsibilities. Andi has to learn to be responsible and take care of Coco, something she really doesn't want to do. But, if she can't take care of Coco, how can she take care of a horse? It also teaches about consequences. When Andi leaves Coco behind and he doesn't come home, she realizes that she was not being responsible and taking care her pony.

I give this book 5 stars. It was a great story with a great lesson for kids.

Imagination Station # 3 Peril in the Palace

This is the third book in the Imagination Station series from Adventures in Odyssey. My kids and I have enjoyed each one. Cousins Patrick and Beth have already traveled to get a sun-stone from the Vikings and a silver cup from Roman monks. Now, in Peril in the Palace, they travel to China. They need to find the golden tablet of Kublai Khan, the emperor of China.

Just traveling to China and picking up the tablet would be easy. But it doesn't work that way for these cousins. Instead, they are kidnapped, challenged as magicians, and put in jail. But, they do have the opportunity to share the message of the Gospel during their travels.

I am now looking forward to book #4, Revenge of the Red Knight. If it is anything like the previous three, I know I will give it 5 stars as well!

Can you picture it?

All Germans are considered Nazi, regardless of where they were born. Even Americans who look German are ridiculed. And those who went back to the home country at the wrong time? They got drafted into the German army, fighting against their homeland, America. Many cannot stand what Hitler is doing, and yet if they flee, they will be shot.

Back home, nurses are caring for the wounded as they return. They know what is happening oversees; they see the limbs lost, the men suffering. They are friends with others who have lost loved ones in the war.

This is the setting for Nightingale. Only, Esther Lange isn't pining for her fiancée, fighting oversees. She doesn't actually love him. But since they have a child together, she figures they really should get married. One day, she receives a letter from another soldier, informing her that Linus is dead. She writes back to the soldier, asking how he died. Soon Esther and Peter begin corresponding back and forth. Once Esther finds out that Peter is a German American, unwillingly fighting on the wrong side, she wonders if things could really work out between them.

This was a very enjoyable book. In that time in history, if a girl got pregnant out of wedlock, the boy did the right thing and married her. But what happened when the girl didn't want to marry him? Susan May Warren addresses this question in a book that I recommend to anyone that likes historical fiction.

Lucy is an inquisitive young woman with a pension for getting herself in trouble. While trying to photograph the elusive white stallion outside of town, she falls out of a tree and lands on a stagecoach, causing the horses to bolt. While trying to help an injured man, she startles her friend, who then knocks over the oil lamp, setting fire to the church. But this doesn't stop her from asking the important questions.

Who exactly is David Wolf?
What secrets is he hiding?
Where is he from?
When is he leaving?
Why is he even in Rocky Creek?
How can she get him to tell her the truth?

David has questions of his own.

Who are the men that sent him down the rapids as a child?
What happened to the wooden box that was taken from him on that day?
Where is the wooden box being kept?
When will people accept him, a half-breed?
Why does Lucy seem to accept him, regardless of his Indian blood?
How can he get her to quit talking so much?

As Lucy and David search for the answers to their questions, they learn things they would have preferred not knowing. They have to learn how to forgive and go on with life, leaning on God for peace.

My review:
I enjoyed this book. It has a little bit of everything. A bit of intrigue, a little mystery, a smidgen of danger, and a passel of romance.

Patchwork Dreams

My review:
Amish fiction are some of my favorite books. But with so many authors now writing Amish fiction, it is like reading a cookie cutter story; they are very similar. Not this one. Jacob and Becky's story in unlike any other I have read. I had a very hard time putting this book down!

About the book:

Miranda grew up as a normal American girl, blue jeans and bicycles, movies and popcorn, music and books. She goes off to college and meets a man that treats her like she was the best thing ever. Naturally, she falls in love. And they get married. Soon he is asking her to throw away her music and books, because they pull her away from God. Then she needs to dress differently, more conservative, as to refrain from attracting attention to her body. Once she starts having children, she stays home more, only seeing people at church.

One day her husband falls of the roof while repairing it, and dies. By this time she has realized that her church isn't all it's cracked up to be. When the pastor claims to hear from God, he is usually looking out for himself. When he tells the congregation they have to leave the state and settle somewhere else, she decides to stay.

After having an accident near her home, leaving her with a mild concussion, her brother-in-law comes to stay with her six children. Even after she arrives home from the hospital, Jack stays. Now she only has to figure out how to avoid moving with the church, even though the pastor is threatening her, and keep her family safe.

Jack Hanford feels like he has stepped back into time. His half-brother's wife needs his help. So he takes a leave of absence from his job at the college to move in with Miranda and her children. He finds out that even though Miranda homeschools her children, they have never read a fiction book. They have never been to see a movie, gone to an amusement park, or even gone to Wal-Mart. Jack sets out to try to free Miranda and her children by introducing them to life outside their four walls.

My thoughts:

My first thought when finishing this book is Wow! Meg Moseley does such an excellent job portraying a widow with no where to turn. Watching this story unfold is like watching a butterfly emerge from the cocoon. At first you wonder what will emerge. Will the butterfly even make it, will it survive the harshness of life and take flight? Or will it give up before it's life has even begun? Slowly the wings appear, closed, looking totally lifeless. You hold your breath, waiting. And then, in an instant, it happens. The butterfly fully frees itself from the confines of the drab cocoon and take flight for the first time.

When Sparrows Fall is just like that butterfly. Reading, watching as Miranda emerges from a beat down, scared widow to a woman protecting herself and her family and finding life and love again.

My review:
I really enjoyed this book. Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres. An Unlikely Suitor blends the defining line between upper and lower classes in the friendship between Lucy and Rowena. These two would have never been friends if they relied on society alone. They meet when Lucy creates a dress for Rowena that helps hide her disability. And a friendship is born.

Spring for Susannah

The first thing I noticed about Spring for Susannah is the fact that it is not your ordinary mail-order bride novel. Instead, Susannah hears about Jesse from his sister-in-law Ellen. She begins writing him, getting to know him before making the trip to the Dakota Territory. Jesse's brother, a minister, marries them be proxy, and off she goes.

Susannah is a very quiet woman. She expects to be put in her place often, so she remains quiet. Showing affection does not come easily to Susannah. She just wasn't raised that way. She has never lived on the frontier before, and has a lot to learn. But she knows about animals. Her deceased father was a veterinarian, and she picked up a thing or two (even though it is scandalous for a lady to talk about such things!).

Jesse is alone. Well, he has neighbors about an hour away. And he has a dog, Jake. But Jesse needs a companion. And he needs someone to talk to. Jesse loves to talk. And joke. And show affection.

In normal circumstances Jesse and Susannah would have never fallen in love. They are just too different. They don't have any common interests. And they were raised completely different. And yet they are introduced (via mail), get married, and fall in love.

A Reluctant Queen

I love the story of Esther. In fact, it is one of my favorite Bible stories. And to know that Esther really existed, that this isn't just a story, but a bit of history.... well, that just makes it more fascinating! Here you have a girl, a young Jewish girl, who is chosen over all the other maidens to become queen of Persia. But then, she risks her life to save her people. The story could have ended with... "Esther went before the king. He refused her. She died." But no, God had bigger plans! Bigger than Esther could have every imagined!

Joan Wolf does an excellent job writing Esther's story. The Biblical account leaves out a lot of details. Why exactly did Esther join the multitude of girls wanting to be queen? Was she forced to, against her will? Did she long to be queen? Or was it a matter of politics, trying to get a Jew close to the king? This is the route Joan takes with this story.

The author brings a lot of politics into the story of Esther that you normally don't see. It gives you another viewpoint. Persia was ruling the Promised Land at this time in history. King Xerxes (otherwise called Ahasuerus) gave Haman the Agagite a position of authority. Haman hated the Jews. He wanted them destroyed. In this book, Haman tries to get the king to fight against the Jews in Palestine. But the king wanted peace in Palestine. So, Haman waits. The king leaves with his troops, leaving Haman in charge. While he is gone Haman writes out a decree to annihilate the Jews. And now we have Esther's time to shine!

At first I wasn't too happy with the way the story is portrayed. But, the more I read it, the more I got into it. At the end of the book, Joan Wolf does explain why she writes the book with a different viewpoint. This is a novel, and should be read as one. There are historical and Biblical facts throughout the book, but there is enough fiction to make it a very enjoyable, page-turning novel.

The Great Mogul Diamond

Do you have a child who just doesn't like to read? Would they prefer a comic book to a chapter book? Well then, they need to try The Dopple Ganger Chronicles. With full page graphics, large descriptive fonts, and even comic strips... this book series has it all!

I just finished reading The Great Mogul Diamond. It was a very good book. I'm absolutely certain that my ten year old will devour this book, and then come asking for more! The story picks up from the previous two books in the series, but can easily be read as a stand alone book.

The story is about twins Sadie and Saskia Dopple, who have been adopted by writer Muzz Elliott, and their friend Erik Morrissey Ganger, who wants to become a detective. Someone is using the mysteries Muzz has written to hatch a crazy scheme to steal the Mogul diamond. And they are framing Muzz for the crime. Sadie, Saskia and Erik have to find out who is behind the scheme and make sure the diamond is not stolen.

I would recommend this book to a wide variety of ages (10-100, at least). This is a great book and I look forward to reading the next one in the series.

The Skin Map

Cosimo Livingstone, whom Kit was named after, has been traveling along parallel dimensions along ley lines for years. But he isn't getting any younger and he needs someone to finish what he has started. Cosimo has been in search of the pieces of a map. He has part of it, but he needs it all. He asks Kit to join him in the search. The map is a most unusual map. It is tattooed onto skin. It seems the man who mapped out all the ley lines didn't want to lose his map and didn't want it falling into the wrong hands, so he had it carefully tattooed onto his body.

I really enjoyed this book, more than I thought I would. It is a gripping story that makes you keep coming back for more.

CSFF Blog Tour - The Ale Boy's Feast

I honestly wasn't sure about this book when I requested it. And I was even more unsure of it once I started reading it. But then I had to take a mental step back. This is the fourth book in a series about Auralia's colors. Auralia has brought colors into a normally drab world. This series tells what happens once the colors are introduced. Reading this as a stand-alone book is definitely not a recommendation.

Aside from the fact that I have only read The Ale Boy's Feast and don't understand the rest of the storyline, the author does an excellent job creating an atmosphere for his story. You can actually see the characters Jeffery Overstreet has created. He has a gift for the imaginary. There are creatures in this book that I would have never even dreamed of, much less been able to describe.

Like anxious road-sweepers, dust columns whirled between the purple dunes, brushing bones, branches, and snakeskins aside in their hurry. The muskgrazers, shaggy as haystacks, ignored the whirlwinds. They hung their hairy heads and thrust curly, sinuous tongues into the grit, probing for burrowbirds and redthislte bulbs. After the dust phantoms passed, the cattle shook clouds of debris from their golden hair.

You can actually see the muskgrazers out there, standing in the middle of a dust storm. The entire book is filled with descriptive phrases to give you a feeling that you are there, that you are a participant in the story.

I remember reading about Christy Miller when I was younger. So when Waterbrook Multnomah offered this book in their book reviews, I jumped at the chance to read it.

Both Christy and Sierra are learning about relationships. Christy has just graduated high school in California and is visiting family in Wisconsin, where she grew up. She meets up with an old friend, one that she had a crush on as a kid. Christy learns how to tell the difference between a crush and a lasting relationship. Sierra is still fifteen; she is spending her summer with some friends at a lake in Montana. She sees another side to Tim, a boy that she has known for a while, and wonders if she should try and pursue a relationship with him. While trying to understand the feelings she has for Tim, her friend Jana begins flirting with him.

I really enjoyed both stories and I look forward to my daughter reading more books from Robin Jones Gunn. She is an excellent author, one that I would recommend to tweens, teens, and young adult girls.

This is a great bible for tweens (those kids whose ages fall between kids and teenagers). It's cover is leather-like. It is a compact Bible, easily fits into one's hand. In the front it says:

Who you are matters
Why you are matters
What you do matters
You matter to God.

Then it explains why in 3 sections throughout the Bible.

In the back it has Great Chapters of the Bible, Great Stories of the Bible, and Great Verses of the Bible to Memorize. The Bible is in New Living Translation, easy to read and understand. There is a girl's version and a boy's version.

The only downside I can see is the typeface, it is very small. But I suppose tweens wouldn't mind this so much.

No Place Like Holmes

What a delightful mystery for young readers! Griffin is an intelligent boy with a photographic memory. His classmates find him annoying and call him teacher's pet, since he usually knows the answer to the question before it is even asked. He notices tiny details and can deduce where a person has been, just by careful observation. Since he wasn't invited to go to summer camp with his fellow classmates, Griffin heads for London. Only, his uncle is not aware that he is coming.

After only one day in London, Griffin already wishes he was somewhere else. His uncle is a private detective, but has a hard time finding clients since Sherlock Holmes lives next door. Eventually, a case falls into Rupert Snodgrass's lap, thanks to his nephew Griffin. Rupert is given the opportunity to use the inventions that he has created to help solve the case. But more importantly, Rupert learns a few things from his nephew, like how to show compassion and how to trust God when things seem bleak.

At the end of the book are two mini-mysteries, very similar to Encyclopedia Brown mysteries. I am very impressed with this book, and I am sure my son will enjoy reading it as well. He loves mysteries. And since this one also promotes a relationship with Christ, I give it 5 stars!

This Little Prayer of Mine

I am learning how important daily communication with God is, and I am trying to pass this knowledge down to my children. My kids are always coming up to me saying, "Mommy, I can't sleep, can you help me pray". Once they have had their time talking to God, they are more relaxed and better able to sleep.

Author Anthony DeStefano does an excellent job covering most basic topics that a child can talk to God about. I will enjoy reading this book with my children, and knowing that they can read it anytime they don't know what to talk to God about, and want some ideas.

Amish Prayers

I could not wait to get this book. Amish Prayers is a collection of prayers from the original German prayer book Die Ernsthafte Christenpflicht, printed in 1708. Each prayer in this book is followed by a scripture reference that coincides with the prayer. The pages also show drawings of Amish men, women and children going about a normal day, whether it be walking down a lane, working in the kitchen, or playing in a wagon.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the Amish way of life.

Promises to Keep

Although I enjoyed Promises to Keep, it took me a while to get into it. Everyone's lives blend together like a patchwork quilt. Looking at only one part of the quilt may look strange, almost ugly. But, if you step back and view the whole quilt, it is a beautiful work of art. That is how I felt reading this book. If I had tried to write a review about it before I got halfway through the book, it would not have been a positive review. But, after stepping back and seeing the book as a whole, I would have to say it was a great book.

The characters are interesting, intriguing, even strange. You have...

Roz - the eleven year old girl whose life changes. She and her siblings have gone from living in the city with her mom and dad to living in a small town with just mom.

Wally - Roz's older half-brother. Wally's dad died in WWII, and his mom married Andy, Roz's dad. Wally hates Andy. But he loves his sisters and tries to keep them protected from Andy when he is drunk.

Valerie - Roz'a two year old sister. Roz helps take care of Valerie.

Janis - Roz's mom. She left her husband after finally getting tired of his drunkenness. She has since moved on, and has started dating someone else, even though her divorce isn't final yet.

Tillie - the elderly woman who used to live in the house Roz's family moved into. Tillie and her late husband had built the house. And Tillie didn't want to leave. It was her dream to die in the house. So, she moves back in; and Janis lets her. Tillie ends up being the "grandmother" of sorts to the children, helping with babysitting, cooking, and cleaning.

Andy - Roz's dad. He finds out where Roz and her family are living, and moves into town. He changes his name to hide his identity, but he secretly meets with Roz. He says he wants to amend things with his wife so they can be a family again.

Mara - Roz's best friend. No one expected Roz and Mara to become friends. In fact, when they first start hanging out, they get looked at funny. When they hold hands while crossing the playground, the other kids just stare. No one expects a white girl and a black girl to be best friends.

Every person in this book has an impact on Roz's young life. The choices that are made, the paths taken, the people met, and the friendships established. Each life is made up of many threads. Ann Tatlock does an excellent job portraying that in her book.

I really enjoyed Here Burns My Candle. Lady Elisabeth Kerr is highlander by birth and lowlander by marriage. She is faithful to her husband, but not to his God. The Lightkeeper's Ball

The Lightkeeper's Ball is book number three in the Mercy Falls Series by Colleen Coble. But, you can't really tell. Unlike most books in a series, this one makes a great stand-alone book. Olivia Stewart's family is among the Four Hundred, the wealthiest in America. But Olivia wants more. She wants to be loved... for who she is, not for what family she belongs to. Olivia's father passed away and her sister left for Mercy Falls to marry a man her father had arranged for her to wed. Unfortunately, something has happened and her sister died. So Olivia travels to Mercy Falls, using her title of Lady Devonshire, to find out what happened to her sister. Olivia finds out much more than she bargained for though.

This was a great book. I would recommend it to anyone that likes historical fiction. The author does a great job making you feel like you are there, that you are living among the characters in the book.

Courting Miss Amsel

I have read books by Kim Vogel Sawyer before, so I was excited to be offered Courting Miss Amsel from Bethany Publishers. The complimentary books I receive from Bethany are in exchange for my honest review.

Courting Miss Amsel is about a young schoolmarm. Edythe has left her home to teach school in a one-room schoolhouse. She left her younger sister Missy with their brother, and walked away from her dad, a selfish man who cares nothing for his children. The school's last teacher was a harsh taskmaster who disciplined the children when they failed to understand a concept in their studies. Edythe would rather teach from a positive standpoint, so she breaks the switch used for correction and promise to never use corporal punishment. Her students are overjoyed. One student, however, takes advantage of the promise and stirs up trouble on a continual basis. Edythe is faced with his antics, plus school board members that question her unusual ways of teaching. When they see sticks in the school yard with rope strung across them, they think the teacher is nuts. What they fail to see is a simple and fun way to teach longitude and latitude.

I really enjoyed this book. It was neat to read about a teacher who goes outside the box to teach her students. Kim Vogel Sawyer did a great job keeping me questioning... will Edythe be fired from her job? Will she trust that not ever father is like her own? Will she learn to trust God? How will she continue teaching her students when one child is determined to make things chaotic? And what would I do if I were in Edythe Amsel's shoes?

The Imagination Station / Attack at the Arena

Having already reviewed Voyage with the Vikings, I was thrilled to be able to also review Attack at the Arena. In this book cousins Patrick and Beth travel to Rome. The are split up, and have to make decisions without the other's help. Beth becomes a bird slave for the emperor. She has to care for the variety of birds the emperor has. Patrick finds himself rescued by a monk. This monk does not plan anything in advance; he does whatever God tells him to do, no matter how crazy it sounds. The cousins are supposed to retrieve a chalice and bring it back to Mr Whittaker.

I really enjoyed this book. I am also looking forward to reading it with my children, once we finish the book we have already started. I'm sure they will love to find out what happens with Patrick and Beth. I would recommend this book to anyone with young children.

Csff Tour: The Resurrection (day 3)

The Resurrection has been an exciting book to read. It is about so much more than a person being raised from the dead. It also deals with the war between good and evil, God and Satan, Christian and warlock. Reading this book reminded me of reading Frank Peretti's Piercing the Darkness and This Present Darkness. As Frank Peretti does, Mike Duran shows us the spiritual side of things, so often overlooked. There is another side out there. Jesus is King of kings. So obviously there are other kings. There are "rulers, authorities and powers" that we stand against, as Christians.

The resurrection in this book is the beginning of a chain of events. The forces of evil have had control over the town of Stonetree for a long time. Once before, a church tried breaking the bondage over the town. But evil forces retaliated. The church burned to the ground, the minister got sick, and a fever swept through the town. The church members gave up. Now, it is time again. Time for the church to take it's stand and oust the forces of dark.

I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially to those interested in fictional books on spiritual warfare. If you have ever read Frank Peretti's books, and enjoyed them, then try Mike Duran's The Resurrection. The setting is different, the tone is even different. But the warfare remains the same. I guarantee you will come away with a better understanding of what is really out there, and how strong our God really is.

For day 2 of this blog tour, I would like to introduce Reverend Ian Clark. This man is just your typical run-of-the-mill minister. He joined the ministry with a passion to serve Christ. But somewhere along the path, life took a turn. Csff Tour: The Resurrection (day 1)

As a new member to the CSFF (Christian Science Fiction and Fantasy) Blog Tour, I am excited to share my reviews about the March book, The Resurrection by Mike Duran. When I read the synopsis, I was intrigued. By chapter 7, I was disappointed. Sometime around chapter 12, I was interested. But once I got to chapter 25, I was definitely hooked.

The Resurrection covers a topic not touched on much by most Christians. We like to think that as long as we keep our relationship with Christ on course, we are okay. And that would be great. But the reality is, there is another side. There is an evil, a god of this world. Can we overcome him? Absolutely! Does he still rule in our lives? Not if we stand against him. Do we have the strength on our own to stand against him? Not at all. That's why we have Jesus, and a relationship with Him. Paul tells us in Philippians that we "can do all things through Christ who strengthens" us. And in Ephesians he says that "our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against rulers, against authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms".

In The Resurrection, a stay-at-home mom attends a funeral. When her turn comes to view the body, she reaches her hand out and touches the dead boy. Seconds after she turns around, he sits up. This begins a chain of events that at first seem strange, that make no sense. (This is where I was disappointed in the book) It got me thinking though. What were to happen if a person was raised from the dead where I live? What would the reaction be? Better yet, what would the local churches have to say about it? Christians can actually be some of the biggest doubters. Yes, they believe that God can raise people from the dead. But for it to happen here, now? If it really happened... would it be believed? Or would people think it was a con?

Lilly's Wedding Quilt

I enjoyed my copy of Lilly's Wedding Quilt. Until now, I had not read any books by Kelly Long. And I am impressed. She is a very good author. In fact, I would rank her up there with Wanda Brunstetter and Beth Wiseman.

In this book, Lilly is a schoolteacher. Her daed passed away some time before, and her mamm does not like to get out often. So, Lilly's life consists of teaching, taking care of her mamm, and attending church. Until she leaves for her friend's wedding one day. Then her life changes. Within a matter of hours she is engaged to marry a horse thief who is already in love with someone else.

Lilly's Wedding Quilt is book #2 in the Patch of Heaven series. But, it is a great stand alone book. I would recommend this book to anyone, and I look forward to reading more of Kelly Long's books.

Sisters of the Quilt, book #1

This book has me looking forward to book #2 of the series! Author Cindy Woodsmall does an excellent job portraying young Hannah Lapp in her role as a teenage girl still going through her rumschpringe (running around years). Hannah wants to leave her order and join her Mennonite boyfriend, Paul. She is biding her time until she is eighteen, so she can leave home legally and her Daed cannot stop her. Unfortunately, she is attacked coming home from visiting Paul. This starts a series of events that cause Hannah's life to seem to spiral out of control. Throughout it all, Hannah learns that God is still there for her, no matter what.

Excellent storyline, great character portrayal, definite read for anyone that likes the current "Amish stories" that are quickly gaining popularity.

Excellent book from Adventures in Odyssey

My children and I thoroughly enjoyed Voyage with the Vikings from Focus on the Family. I grew up with the Adventures in Odyssey gang. When I heard about this book, I was thrilled to have the chance to read and review it.

Cousins Patrick and Beth travel to Greenland, to meet Erik the Red, his son Lief and many more vikings. Erik is unhappy with God, and is not pleased that his son has chosen a path of peace, rather than war. The cousins are instructed to find the Sunstone while they are with the vikings. Only, they don't know where to look, or what it even looks like.

Yes, this is a wonderful book, enjoyed by all ages. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. Thank you, Tyndale, for giving me this book in return for an honest review.

Imagination Station

I just received my free copy of The Imagination Station Voyage with the Vikings. I review books for Tyndale Publishers, and in return they give me the book for free.

I am excited about reading this with my kids. I grew up with the Adventures in Odyssey. I remember hearing radio programs and later watching it on TV. I can't wait to watch my kids' faces and hear their comments on the book. My eight-year-old has already informed me that this is "her book". So, once we are done reading it together, I'm sure it will end up in her hands!

More to come once we finish the book.

I wasn't sure if I would like Susan Meissner's book, *The Shape of Mercy*, since it's focus seems to be the Salem witch trials. But, I was in for a surprise.

Lauren Durough goes to work for an elderly woman, transcribing a diary written by a girl accused of being a witch during the Salem witch trials. As Lauren uncovers more of Mercy's story, she also learns more about herself.

I would encourage just about anyone to read this book. It is a story within a story, and a very well written one at that.

Another great Amish story!

"What the Heart Sees" by Kathleen Fuller is actually three stories in one. Each story is also published in 3 different books, along with other Amish-fiction authors. If you have already read "An Amish Christmas", "An Amish Gathering", or "An Amish Love" then you will recognize the stories in this one. I had not, and I thoroughly enjoyed all three stories.

All three stories focus on forgiveness... forgiving one another, forgiving oneself, and accepting forgiveness from God.

In "A Miracle for Miriam", Miriam has to forgive Seth for causing her pain years before. And Seth learns to accept forgiveness from God and Miriam for the way he had acted growing up.

"A Place of His Own" tells the story of Josiah, a man who had problems in his childhood that even his closest friend knew nothing about. He comes home to Paradise to sell his family home and disappear again. But God has other plans.

Christopher learns a hard lesson in forgiveness and letting go of the past in "What the Heart Sees". Five years prior, he had lost his fiance in a car accident. Since then, he has remained bitter since the person responsible for the accident did not seem to suffer at all. He soon finds out more about the day of the accident that as never told before. Will he forgive and leave the past in the past?

I greatly recommend this book and look forward to reading more of Kathleen's books

Dragons, Emerlindians, Wizards, and more

I just finished reading Dragons of the Valley by Donita K. Paul. It was a very good book. Unfortunately, it took some time to get into it, since I hadn't read book #1 first. I find this the case in most series-books though. It is understandable. I would like to suggest to authors that when they write a series, make sure to put "book #1, #2" and so forth on the cover. It is a disappointment to begin reading a book only to find that you have no clue who the characters are until you get halfway through the book, since they were introduced in a previous book.

Anyway, back to the main topic here. This author has a very good imagination. She has created characters and races of people that are singular to her stories. Emerlindians, for example, are "tall and slender. They are born pale with white hair and pale gray eyes. As they age, they darken". Each race, character and more are given a short description in the appendix of the book. Also, the names she gives her characters are outgrageously individual. Graddapotmorphit Bealomondore is a tumanhofer artist. (See what I mean by her imagination?)

In this story Princess Tipper, Bealomondore and their friends must keep three statues from falling into the wrong hands. As war erupts on the land, they are forced to decide what to do, where to go, and who they can trust. It is a story of war, love, and intrigue that will baffle and excite all generations of readers.

Good book - recommend reading book #1 first though

This was my first time reading a book by Cindy Woodsmall. I am impressed. Very well written, gripping story.

Lena is a woman with a physical blemish. She has a birthmark on the side of her face. She has learned how to cope with it, and not let the remarks of others influence who she is, although the the remarks themselves do hurt. She learns, though, that everyone has a blemish, a stain. Some are outward, while most are inward. She is able to use that knowledge to help reach out to others.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Although, since it was the second in a series, there were times that I was confused. There were characters and instances that were mentioned that I was unsure about. It left holes in the story. My recommendation is that you read book #1 in the Ada's House Series, The Hope of Refuge. I did not read it first. In fact, I didn't even know there was a book #1, as it is not mentioned anywhere that I could find.

Overall, I give this book 3.5 stars.

The Beginning Reader's Bible

I was very impressed by "The Beginning Reader's Bible". Each page has a colorful picture. The stories are taken from the International Children's Bible, which I really like. Each story has the verses, so you can follow along in another Bible. The back of the Bible has a section with favorite verses, the Ten Commandments, the twelve disciples, the twelve tribes of Israel and more. There is even a reading plan.

The only disappointing aspect of this Bible is the lack of page numbers. It does have a table of contents, but there are no page numbers to help you find the correct story. Otherwise, I give this Bible 5 stars. It is a wonderful addition to any child's reading choices.

Beneath the Night Tree

I really liked "Beneath the Night Tree" by Nicole Baart. It took me a couple chapters to get into the story line... but then I was hooked!

Julia DeSmit has an unconventional family. Pregnant her freshman year of college, she returns home to her paternal grandmother. Her brother, younger by 14 years, is also living there. Five years later, they run into some problems that threaten to tear their small family apart. But, Julia learns that she needs to trust in God, that He holds her life in the palm of His hand, and that He cares for her.

Julia's insights can be beneficial to many of us. We often let life get in the way of our relationship with Him. Many times, we call on His name when we need something, but then let Him fall by the wayside when things are going ok for us. Julia learns that she can't always rely on those around her to hold her up. Life happens. It does get in the way. And sometimes those that we are leaning on end up needing to lean on us. But God is always there. And in our weakness, He is strong.

A Billion Reasons Why by Kristin Billerback

Katie’s physically trip would take her to her hometown of New Orleans. She had been asked to sing at a Ryan’s wedding, a friend she grew up with. The invitation came via his brother Luc, the man who turned down her proposal eight years before.

Her emotional trip would take her further still. Katie would finally cope with her dad’s passing years before. She would face the questions raised when Luc bought her dad’s grocery store the day he died. Katie would also face the people of New Orleans, the same ones who witnessed the denied proposal. But, Katie would also renew friendships and make new friends as well.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Once I started reading it, I couldn’t put it down. I would recommend this book to anyone.

A ring with a remarkable past

Lady in Waiting is an excellent book. It is actually two stories in one. First you have Jane who runs her great-aunt's antique store. She is facing problems in her life, and is unsure of what to do. She comes across a ring, a very beautiful, very old ring. And she wants to know more. Where did the ring come from? Who owned it? Why does it seem that the ring was never worn? And most importantly, why is her name inscribed on the inside?

Then you have Lucy, seamstress to Lady Jane Grey. When Lucy meets Lady Jane, the lady is only 11 years old. Since Lucy herself is still young, they form a bond, a friendship only slightly hindered by their differences in status. Lady Jane confides in Lucy, shares her inner-most secrets. The two remain friends, even when life drifts them apart.

I would definitely recommend this book, especially to those that like historical fiction.

Little Star... Big Story

The children's book "Little Star" written by Anthony De Stefano is an excellent story. The author tells the Christmas story from a totally different point of view. A young boy is anxiously searching for the Christmas star. His did gives him the unfortunate news that the little star is no longer in the sky. And then he proceeds to tells his son the story.

Little Star is a lonely star, the smallest of them all. He isn't made fun of by the other stars, but he is ignored. While all the other stars are preparing for the coming king to be born on earth, he is sadly off to the side. And yet, once the King is born, Little Star is the only one that recognizes Jesus for the King that He is.

Little Star is an excellent addition to our family's Christmas stories. I would recommend this book to any families with younger children. I'm sure it will be read time and time again.

Christmas is over, is Christ packed away too?

Twas the night after Christmas, and all through the house
Not a creature was thankful, not even a mouse.
The stockings were emptied, the candy all eaten
the once live Christmas tree now thoroughly beaten.

The children were bouncing around with glee,
exclaiming over each new toy happily.
And momma rocking junior, glad it's all over,
and dad in his chair, already tired of hearing Grover.

Once again time to pack away all Christmas cheer,
until this time comes again next year.
The house in disorder shall soon be righted,
once junior decides bedtime's been sighted.

The ornaments removed, each packed in it's place,
the tree taken down, leaving empty space.
Children scamper away, hoping to only play,
Leaving mom and dad to do the cleanup this day.

Dad walks outside, surveying the yard,
thinking, 'putting this up wasn't this hard.'
Santa and reindeer deflate to a pile,
lights removed from roofing tile.

Where wrapping paper was shredded,
mom seems to be headed,
for cleaning up the messes,
everyone knows moms are the bestest.

And finally the scene, oh holy last night,
gets packed away, once again out of sight.
Precious baby Jesus, all swaddled in foam,
is tucked away in His new home.

But, does anyway thank Jesus for the treasures they hold,
For the dear baby given, as angels foretold?
Does anyone remember what He gave to us?
His life for our own, that's something to discuss.

Let's not forget, as the days pass us by,
the reason we sing "O Holy Night".
The dear baby boy, born long ago,
who died on the cross so that we may know

the saving grace of a King, given to every man,
to know the salvation that is at hand.
To accept Jesus Christ, as Savior to all
and make Him your King, that isn't so small.

So please remember, the reason we sing
The message behind each bell that rings
In joyful worship to the newborn King
Oh Savior, Messiah, our praises we bring.

The nativity scene

The bitter cold stung her nose, as the tears that formed threatened to make tracks down her frostbitten face. Her threadbare coat, struggling to keep her warm, hung loosely on her frame. She was grateful for the used boots she had found in a garbage can. Hardly a hole in them, she could easily overlook the fact that they pinched slightly.
   She hoped to find some comfort here, in the center of this little town, cozily nestled at the base of the mountain. She had traveled a long way, looking for acceptance, for love.
   She gazed up at the Christmas tree, grandly displayed in the town square. Soaring over 10 feet in height, the live evergreen was gaily decorated for the season. Lights, ornaments, garland, and beads helped show everyone that this town knew how to celebrate Christmas.
   Surely a town that celebrates Christmas to this degree could help a poor, half-frozen young woman. All outward appearances showed that this place was the place to be for the holidays. Perhaps she had finally found what she was looking for.
   Her attention was drawn to the nativity scene, nestled below the massive tree. Its dark, muted colors contrasted the brightly lit tree. Mary and Joseph stared, without actually looking, at the tiny baby laying a manger. The shepherds and wise men looked on, as if merely passing the time before being stored away till next year. The hay looked as if it had been there for more than one season of Christmas. The baby himself seemed to want to lay somewhere else even.
   She still maintained the hope she found while gazing at the tree. Perhaps the little nativity scene needed some tender loving care, but at least the tree stood proud. These wise men didn't seem to be interested in worshiping the Christ-child, but the star at the top of the tree still shown brightly. Mary and Joseph's smiles may have dimmed over the years, but surely the brightness of the lights would compensate. The baby, wrapped in.. well, what used to be swaddling clothes.. lay hidden beneath the enormous boughs of the evergreen.
   She longed to hold the dear baby, to wrap her own cloak about his cold shoulders. But, she herself was cold, freezing in fact. She had no extra garments to lend to this child, this baby whom the town forgot. Once again, it seemed there was no room for the baby Jesus. She then realized the truth. There would be no loving acceptance here. This town loved Christmas, with its lights and splendor. But, they neglected the reason for the season. Behind those locked doors, where the townspeople kept warm while anxiously waiting to open their gifts, there was bitterness and strife. Arguments and jealousies ensued where bitter, anger words were given more abundantly than forgiveness and acceptance.
   Still cold, she chose to stay with the Christ-child. Here, tucked into the scene at the base of the tree, was the one place she would feel acceptance. Jesus Himself would hold her close this night. She felt a calm spread over her, like warm honey. She nestled in closer to Mary, who seemed to smile a little brighter. Joseph sat up a little taller, along with the wise men and shepherds, seeming to enjoy sharing this moment with someone. Even the Christ-child, lying in the manager, looked happier.
   Soon after, a young boy and his mother were passing by the magnificent tree. Normally, the boy would gaze above, trying to see the star at the very top. But not this night. Instead his gaze was drawn to the manager, where the young woman lay, sound asleep. It appeared as if she belonged, as if she was a part of the nativity scene. Her smile shone brighter than any of the lights blinking on the tree. Her arm was outstretched, so that her hand could hold the tiny hand of the Christ-child. Her threadbare coat helped to cover the baby. Mary and Joseph seemed to be gazing at her, and not the baby. Their expressions shown a heavenly love, accepting one of God's own. She had come home. She found her acceptance, her love, and went home to be with her Heavenly Father, whose arms would continue to hold her, forever.
   The townspeople gathered around, in awe of the quiet scene beneath the boughs of the tree, located in the center of the town, nestled at the base of the mountain. A peace settled upon them, as tears silently coursed down their cheeks. This is the reason for the season. Not the tree, not the lights. Not the garland, not the star. Not even the gifts. Love, in its simplest form. Love, giving of oneself for another.
   Slowly, families searched each other out, asking forgiveness and mending hurts. Tears of sorrow turned into tears of joy, as cutting words became words of encouragement, as jealousies became acceptance, where hatred turned to love.
   This Christmas, the townspeople learned how to be accepting, how to forgive, how to love. The young woman, unknown to anyone, had taught them the reason for the season.

Let Every Heart Prepare Him Room

I requested this book from Tyndale Publishers just in time for the holidays. This devotional is written specifically for the month of December. Author Nancy Guthrie does a wonderful job of brining the daily events surrounding the birth of Christ into our own daily lives. Each day, there is a family-oriented devotion, a prayer, family discussion starters, and a section with more from the Bible.

She has also included many well known Christmas Carols and a short devotional to go with each. Occasionally throughout the book, Nancy has comments and questions pages, where you can write in notes about your families discussions.

Let every heart prepare a room is a family devotional I would recommend to anyone, to read together every year.

The Walk by Shaun Alexander

Shaun Alexander teaches you the five stages of spiritual maturity, how to recognize each stage, and how to live each stage. He individually breaks down what each stage is, trials traps and victories of each, and how Peter walked in each stage.

The Unbeliever, the first stage, where we all begin. The Believer, the point where the angels rejoice because another soul is saved. The Example, the believer living for God and showing the unbelievers, by example, how to live full lives. The Teacher, the believer who has gone the next step, and is now teaching others. And the Imparter, the believers who do the miraculous works of Christ.

Since he is a former NFL player, he uses football in a lot of his examples. And since I am not a football fan, many of the analogies are lost to me. But, the gist of his message comes across very well.

I enjoyed reading this book; and I learned a lot from it. It is definitely a book I will read again.

ICB Big Red Holy Bible

Wow! I just received my copy of the International Children's Bible "Big Red" Holy Bible. This Bible is translated especially for children. It contains a dictionary/index and colorful maps. The "Where do I find it?" section makes it easier to find the Bible story you are looking for. "What God promises about" contains many promises God has given us for varies areas of our lives. Plus, there is a section of Memory Verses to help kids memorize scripture.

I am very pleased with this Bible. I have been looking for a Bible for my 9-year old, and this one fits the bill, perfectly. It is easy to read, has colorful 3-D artwork displaying many Bible characters. This copy is in paperback, which my son will enjoy (he isn't a fan of hardback books).

Lice - nasty little buggers

Have you ever had lice? Or worse yet, have you ever had a child with lice? It is an experience I do not wish to repeat!

When the school nurse called me last Friday, I wasn't sure what to expect. She informed me that my 6 year old daughter was in her office. I ran through the usual checklist in my mind... fever, throwing up, diarrhea, hmm what could it be. Then she said the word. The one I did not want to hear.... lice. I told her she could tell me it was fever, or even throwing up. That I could handle. But lice? Even the thought sends me into a panic, scratching everywhere (not just my head).

So, I get her from school, and treat her. And check her. And treat her again. And check her again. And today, Wednesday, I take her back to school. Only to bring her back home. And check her. And treat her. And hope to try again tomorrow.

Webster's dictionary says that lice (plural for louse) is "any of various small wingless usually flattened insects parasitic on warm-blooded animals." The definition for head louse is ": a sucking louse that lives on the human scalp". Yeah, okay. That sums it up... not!

It is more than just a parasite bug, it is a lice shampoo-resistant, stubborn, disgusting little bug that is wrecking havoc in my life! The slang for the word louse is "a contemptible person, esp. and unethical one". Yeah, that sums it up better. A contemptible, unethical parasite feeding on the scalp of a person.

So, wish me luck. And I will all of you luck if and when you run into these nasty buggers. I'm off to de-louse my child.

I am really enjoying "Jesus Lives" by Sarah Young. I've honestly never really been a devotional book reader. In fact, I am still working on trying to fit it into my daily routine. But this book is great. This book is a companion to the previously released "Jesus Calling", also by Sarah Young.

For each topic listed, Sarah has expounded on scripture, bringing it to a level of understanding that almost anyone can grasp, teenager to mature adult.

The author has designed this book so that the reader can choose to read through the book daily, or select a topic listed in the contents. Once the book has been opened to the selected page, the left page has the title of the topic, and the author's interpretation/ inspiration of the scriptures that are listed on the facing page. Sarah's message of the Gospel is presented in a captivating manner, strong, yet caring, as if God Himself was writing the words.

I would strongly recommend this book to others, especially those needing a little more in their daily devotionals.

Share your books and keep track of where your books are at.

The "3 Rs" of BookCrossing...

Read a good book (you already know how to do that)
Register it (along with your journal comments), get a unique BCID (BookCrossing ID number), and label the book.
Release it for someone else to read (give it to a friend, leave it on a park bench, hide it in a tree, "forget" it in a coffee shop...). You will be notified by e-mail each time someone records a journal entry for that book. If you make Release Notes on the book, others can Go Hunting for it and try to find it!

Example:
* You read a really good book and want to give it away so someone else can enjoy it to.
* Sign up at bookcrossing.com for free and register your book.
* They assign a number to your book.
* You put the number, along with the website address, in the book (you can even make labels to use!).
* Now, you leave it somewhere (you can be very creative here).
* Make a journal entry at bookcrossing.com to identify where you left the book.
* Now, you just sit back and wait.
* When someone gets your book and signs into the website to journal it, you get an email to let you know where your book is!

Being a Parent

Being a parent is more of a learning experience than I ever thought possible. Decisions, both great and small, need to be made on a daily basis. Choices ranging from what to fix for dinner to whether or not to home school the kids have an effect on everyday living.

The media continually shows us the latest in every trend: food, clothing, diets, vitamins, religion, housing, video games, movies, entertainment and so forth. Peers continually influence the way we think, and the way our children think. Schools dictate what the children learn, and don't learn. It is up to us, the parents, to teach our children the difference between right and wrong, the correct way to respond to peer pressure, the healthy way to live their lives.

Proverbs 22:6 (NKJ) says: Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.

Teaching our children respect; respect for others, respect for themselves, and most importantly respect for God; teaches them values they will not find in society today. Gone are the days when everyone knew each other. Gone are the days when God was the center of everyone's lives, the center of our (the United States) government. Children once knew better than to get out of line, even away from their parents line of sight. Neighbors were more than just the person living in the house next to you. Neighbors were close friends, and in some cases family. Neighbors worshiped together, shared meals with each other, had BBQ's.

In today's society, parents tend to feel like they are on an island, that no one knows and understands how frustrated they get with parenting. Neighbors have become a face next door, instead of a friend to rely on. God has become a being that lives above us, watching our every move, but not interacting with us.

In being a parent, I have learned how to examine circumstances in many different views (mainly depending on the child's age that I am talking to). I have learned not to take life for granted, but to enjoy each moment with the joy and happiness I see on my children's faces. I have learned that God is not just "the man upstairs". He is real, and He wants to be an active part of my life. I have also learned that God has given me advice I can use on a daily basis when raising my children:

Do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4 (NIV)

Even a child is known by his actions, by whether his conduct is pure and right. Proverbs 20:11 (NIV)

He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. 1 Timothy 3:4 (NIV)

Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. Deuteronomy 4:9 (NIV)

Discipline your son (or daughter), and he (or she) will give you peace; he (or she) will bring delight to your soul. Proverbs 29:17 (NIV)

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Hebrews 12:7-11 (NIV)

Although parenting is a challenge, I know that I can rely on the Word of God when I feel like I am failing.

I also know that parenting is very rewarding. When my children first: walked, talked, went to school, learned to read, got baptized, went to high school, I feel proud to be their parent. To see a challenge my children face, and to watch them make decisions based on what they have been taught is also rewarding.

Being a parent is more of a learning experience than I ever thought possible. And I wouldn't change a thing.
